Battery Support Construction

6/25/06- Since I am installing a heavy engine (IO-540), the plans say to mount the battery tray behind the rear seat.  My battery is a Concorde RG 25XC, so I made a mock-up of the battery box out of cheap Masonite, which measures 8.5W X 6.0D X 7.8H and then designed the battery tray to fit it.  I'm going to make the real battery box out of aluminum.  The battery box mock-up will help me locate the battery tray properly behind the rear seat back.
6/25/06- The battery tray measures 9.75 X 7.125 and is made of 5/8x.035 tubing and .050 plate welded in the bottom corners to support the box.  This picture shows the bottom view of the tray.
6/26/06- I rigged up a jig out of notched 1x2's and stacked 2x4's to hold the battery tray level at 17" as indicated in the plans.  I also clamped the tray to the 2x4's to keep it from moving while I notched the tubing to attach it to the fuse structure.
6/26/06- I notched and tacked the 2 horizontal tubes first.
6/26/06- Then I notched and tacked the vertical support tubes.
6/26/06- All the structure clears the mocked up battery box by 1/2".  The battery box can be easily removed for service through the seat back structure.
6/26/06- The tray came out level with the upper longerons per the plans.
