8/19/08- Making simple weld-on brackets.

Making Nutplate Brackets

There are lots of little brackets required on a Skybolt for mounting things like floorboards, pumps, solenoids, seatbacks, sheet metal and even ELT's.

While you can easily make them out of square or rectangular steel tubing, you can also make them out of flat steel plate.

Click on the pictures to make them larger.

Here is the finished product and 4 brackets that haven't been bent and cut apart yet.  Before I weld them to the fuselage, I will clean them up and drill them out for nutplates.  While you can make the brackets any size, these are 1"x1.5" with .75" ears meant for 3/16" nutplates.
Bend up the ears on one side on the brake.  I like to use 6"x12" .040" 4130 plate.  I can get 16 brackets out of one plate.  That's only $0.20 each.
Bend up the 2nd side ears and you're almost done.
All we have to do now is cut the brackets apart on the bandsaw, clean them up, drill for the nutplates, notch the ears to fit the fuselage tubing and weld them on.
